Yorkshire

We had a good flight and arrived not too tired in Manchester at 6:50am on Friday morning. Our adventure began with the hire car in a park on floor 13. We set the sat-nav for Acaster and set off. Unfortunately, the poor woman thought we were already on the street, but, we were driving around the carpark trying to get to the ground floor. This led to some confusion where we were directed to roundabouts that didn't appear. In our almost new Peugot, David continued to indicate our intention with the windscreen wipers. We managed to leave Manchester behind in a very flustered state with abuse being hurled at the sat-nav while I struggled to key in directions.
After a bite to eat at Barnsley, I purchased a mobile phone that has taken me two days to work out how to call. I thought they were all the same but have given up on the date which is now 2 January and time is about 10 hours ahead.
We spent the afternoon with Jill and Richard and have since had a great time with fabulous food and wine and lots in common. Saturday we woke to a glorious sunny day and spent it in York visiting the National Railway museum, York Minster, Jorvik and the markets. We had timed our arrival in York with the York Races and decided to catch the park and ride bus into the city to save on the rather high parking fees and probably no available parks. This was an adventure in itself as David missed the turn and we ended up in the centre of York only to drive all the way back out to the park and ride.
Sunday David and Richard spent some time in a Stub Wood on the edge of Acaster Malbis and Jill and I talked family history. We set off before lunch to Pickering and this time the sat-nav behaved. We visited the north York Moors railway but no steam train, only an old model diesel. We walked up to Pickering castle a English Heritage property and payed about 14 dollars. We had a quick lunch and looked through the flea market before driving back through Helmsley to York and back home.
Tomorrow we leave and head north to Ripon and across to the Yorkshire Dales.

  3. So pleased to hear you are enjoying the top end of England, you can't beat those Northern girls although the improved version will be the people from the other side of the Peninnes
Manly hasn't changed since you left, just much colder. The markets are on Saturday, so we will be filling the fridge with F.F.F. -fresh farm food. Alex is getting organised slowly, but he will make it to the airport, dressed or not!
Love reading your blog-keep it up.
